Employer's Guide
to Managing On-the-Job Injuries
How and Where to Seek Treatment
Employees can:
- Choose from many BWC-certified providers.
- Go to any provider for emergencies.
- Change providers during treatment.
Q. Who are University Hospitals CompCare’s providers?
A. University Hospitals CompCare, an affiliate of University Hospitals
Health System, has a network of more than 4,000 BWC-certified
providers who regularly treat work-related injuries at 5,500
locations throughout Ohio. Providers include primary care
physicians, occupational medicine specialists, orthopedic
specialists, neurologists, rehabilitation medicine specialists,
and other specialists, as well as ambulatory/urgent care centers,
hospitals and rehabilitation facilities.
Q. Can an employee choose a provider outside the University
CompCare network?
A. Yes. University Hospitals CompCare will manage the employee’s
care even if he or she selects a provider from outside our network.
However, we strongly recommend that employees choose from among the
list of BWC-certified providers to avoid incurring out-of-pocket
expenses. Every one of our network providers is BWC-certified.
Q. What if the injury requires emergency medical treatment?
A. The employee should proceed to the nearest medical
facility, whether or not it is a certified, network provider. The
employee should present his or her University Hospitals CompCare identification card.
The emergency provider must contact University Hospitals CompCare at
1-800-818-7273 within 24 hours to report the injury and medical status.
Q. Can the employee change providers after an initial visit?
A. Yes. However, we strongly recommend that the employee
follow up with the first health care provider he or she sees after
a non-emergency injury. By remaining with the initial provider,
the employee is most likely to experience a steady progression
of treatment for the injury and a faster recovery.
If the employee decides to change providers, he or she can
choose one from the University Hospitals CompCare network or seek care
outside the network, as long as the provider is BWC-certified.
To change providers, the employee must first call University
CompCare at 1-800-818-7273.
Q. What if the employee needs to see a specialist or go to the hospital?
A. The health care provider and the University Hospitals CompCare
case manager will coordinate all of the employee’s health
care needs, including any additional medical attention the person
may require to make a full recovery.
