Q. What is the first thing an employee should do when a
work-related injury occurs?
A. For non-emergency injuries, your employee should notify
a supervisor or workers' compensation representative at your company.
Q. What is the employee's next step?
A. The The employee should then seek treatment from an Ohio
Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC)-certified health care provider,
which are listed in an easy-to-use, searchable document on BWC’s Web
site. Although the employee has the ultimate right to choose his or
her own provider, we highly recommend that the employee select a
health care provider from among University Hospitals CompCare’s network of
providers, all of whom are BWC-certified. This helps us ensure a
consistent, high quality of care. As the employer, you should have
our Provider Network Directory on hand to help employees find a
University Hospitals CompCare network provider if they request such
assistance.
Q. What is the first thing the employer should do when a
work-related injury occurs?
A. The employer should complete a BWC First Report of Injury
(FROI) form. The form will include pertinent information regarding
the employer, the employee, the nature of the incident and the
treatment prescribed by the provider. Employers should have blank
copies of the FROI on hand or it can be copied from the BWC Web site.
Q. What happens next?
A. Within 24 hours of the injury, the employer should fax
the FROI information to University Hospitals CompCare at 1-800-654-3849.
University Hospitals CompCare will then gather all the necessary information
and submit it to BWC. If the employee is unable to return to work
immediately, the case manager will begin managing the case.
Q. Can University Hospitals CompCare disallow the claim?
A. No. Only BWC is authorized to allow or deny claims.
University Hospitals CompCare’s role is to provide medical management of
the work-related injury to facilitate employee recovery and

him or her out of Ohio – or even out of the country – and there
is an injury on the job, the employee should seek treatment from
an appropriate medical provider and follow the procedures outlined
in the companion employee booklet. University Hospitals CompCare will manage
the case and reimburse providers for MCO-authorized, BWC-allowed,
work-related claims.
