Public Employers Earn ‘Bonus Checks’

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) will be mailing an estimated $66 million in "bonus checks" to 2,755 Ohio public employers later this year for attending a BWC Public Employer Summit about improving workplace safety and managing workers’ compensation costs.

Public employers’ top officials, including mayors, were invited to attend one of 14 summits held throughout Ohio. BWC said eligible public entities attending the summits earned approximately $66 million of a potential $67 million available, which was based on a 25 percent bonus on workers’ compensation premiums for the 2001 policy year. The 989 non-attending employers will not receive the bonus.

BWC is urging public employers to invest the bonus in worker safety and training programs, which it said can further improve a public employer’s bottom line and cost effectiveness.
