New Steel Erection Standard in Full Force
OSHA officially began enforcement of its new steel erection standard
on March 29, 2002. The standard took effect January 18, but
enforcement through general-schedule inspections was delayed until
March so the agency could emphasize industry outreach and education.
The standard is designed to protect iron workers from steel
erection’s most common, serious hazards, including working under
loads; hoisting, landing and placing decking; column stability;
double connections; landing and placing steel joists; and falls to
lower levels.
