Remain-at-Work: Will It Work?
The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation has changed its rehabilitation rules to encourage
employers to adopt "remain-at-work" programs. Previously, only injured workers who had
missed more than seven days of work were eligible to participate in rehabilitation plans.
Now, even workers with so-called medical-only (no lost time) claims are eligible to participate
in BWC-approved rehabilitation programs. Furthermore, rehabilitation service providers are
now able to come to the workplace to provide rehabilitation services on-site, which keeps
workers used to coming to work and helps service providers understand job demands.
University Hospitals CompCare is responsible for managing rehabilitation services for its employer
customers.
The workers' compensation system has given a lot of attention and resources in recent years to
dealing with lost-time claims. What remain at work does is focus on the medical-only claims so
that they don't become lost-time cases.
