Car occupants suffer most traffic deaths
Passenger car occupants account for the vast majority of
traffic-related deaths and injuries in the U.S., according
to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
Based on data from a study by the Pan American Health Organization,
AAA said 80 percent of all traffic deaths and injuries occur in
passenger cars. Pedestrian injuries and deaths account for
approximately 13 percent, motorized two-wheelers 5 percent, and
bicyclists less than 2 percent.
AAA noted that the U.S. has more than 42,000 deaths due to motor
vehicle crashes annually. AAA is emphasizing the need for extra
attention to the "three most vulnerable groups of passenger car
occupants": children, teens and seniors.
