University Hospitals CompCare Makes a Strong Case for Managed Care in Magazine Article
The Ohio Health Partnership Program (HPP) is a "financially, legally sound approach to
integrating managed care into workers' compensation," according to Clairmonte Cappelle, vice
president of University Hospitals CompCare, writing in the April 1999 issue of Occupational Hazards
magazine.
Cappelle said the program's focus on private/public sector partnerships, recordkeeping and
return-to-work performance has helped employers and managed care organizations (MCOs)
improve the medical management of work-related injuries. Cappelle said facilitating
communication among employers, injured workers, medical providers and the Bureau of
Workers' Compensation is one of the most important functions of MCOs such as University
CompCare.
For the first couple of years after HPP began in 1997, MCOs were evaluated based on their
customer service and claim- and medical bill-processing capabilities. More recently, Cappelle
explained, the focus has shifted toward outcome-oriented measures, such as return-to-work
rates and customer satisfaction surveys.
