Injury Management Process

In Life-Threatening Emergencies

  • Step 1: Emergency provider administers necessary emergency treatment to stabilize injured worker and address immediate medical needs.

  • Step 2: Emergency provider determines that University Hospitals CompCare is the injured worker's employer's MCO and contacts University Hospitals CompCare at 1-800-818-7273 (number found on employee wallet card).

  • Step 3: Emergency provider works with University Hospitals CompCare to gather information for First Report of Injury (FROI) form. Provider can file FROI by FAX to University CompCare at 1-800-654-3849.

  • Step 4: Injured employee visits BWC-certified physician of record for follow-up care.

  • Step 5: Physician of record determines necessary treatment and contacts University CompCare case manager for approval before administering treatments that require prior authorization

  • Step 6: Provider collaborates with University Hospitals CompCare case manager on development of treatment plan. University Hospitals CompCare coordinates regular contact among employer, provider and injured worker to keep all parties involved in the return-to-work process.

  • Step 7: Employer/provider/University Hospitals CompCare determine that employee can return to work full time.

  • Step 8: Employee returns to work full time, and University Hospitals CompCare case manager closes the case per BWC guidelines.

In Non-Life-Threatening Cases

  • Step 1: Employee reports injury to employer/supervisor.

  • Step 2: Employee seeks treatment from a BWC-certified medical provider, including participants in University Hospitals CompCare's provider network.

  • Step 3: Injured worker identifies University Hospitals CompCare as his or her MCO and shows identification card, if available. Provider contacts employer or University Hospitals CompCare for verification.

  • Step 4: Employer or provider files First Report of Injury form by FAX to University CompCare at 1-800-654-3849.

  • Step 5: BWC-certified physician of record determines necessary treatment and contacts University Hospitals CompCare case manager for approval before administering treatments that require prior authorization

  • Step 6: Provider collaborates with University Hospitals CompCare case manager on development of treatment plan. University Hospitals CompCare coordinates regular contact among employer, provider and injured worker to keep all parties involved in the return-to-work process.

  • Step 7: Employer/provider/University Hospitals CompCare determine that employee can return to work full time.
